March is an important month in the history of the socialist labor movement in relation to working women. At that time the Section of dressmakers and varnishers of the Needle Union of the UGT of Madrid was created. On the day an event took place at the People's House in the capital where this labor organization was established. The room was filled with dressmakers varnishers and the workers from the handkerchief factory on Fernández de los Ríos Street since the assembly was used to also discuss the labor problem they suffered.
The meeting was chaired by a prominent member of the CXB Directory ailors' Section Cordobés with different colleagues taking part emphasizing one of the pillars of socialist unionism that is the importance of worker organization and the advantages that it brought. .
Then the specific issue of the negotiations that were underway in the aforementioned handkerchief factory was discussed. Precisely these workers approved some bases: an eight-hour day and a classification of specialties with their respective wages in addition to the elimination of fines and misdemeanors and the payment of full monthly wages along with the establishment of Sunday rest the suppression of work piecework and that of girls under fourteen years of age.
In the second part of the assembly the constitution of the new Section was discussed which would be integrated into the Needle Union as we have expressed at the beginning of the article. In it a manifesto was approved that spoke of the youth of the dressmakers and their lack of hatred in addition to alluding that although late they had understood their duty. But the importance of the text lay in the requests: an eight-hour day an increase of between to in wages reduction of evenings to a maximum of two hours and Sunday rest. The issue of working hours and rest was constantly insisted upon because these workers suffered endless days precisely due to the abuse of piecework.
A commission of dressmakers visited the civil governor to present the conclusions with the requests. The Madrid dressmakers were setting off.
We have written several articles in various digital media about the unionization of Madrid women in the textile sector in Madrid which we can consult.
